Cutting on the water surface requires a water storage tank. The worktable used to place the workpiece in the water storage tank is composed of a number of ordered steel members with pointed tops, which support the workpiece to be cut on a horizontal surface. When the cutting torch is working, the plasma arc is surrounded by a layer of water curtain. In order to maintain a continuous water curtain, a circulating water pump is required to pump the water from the water storage tank and then into the cutting gun. When water is sprayed from the cutting gun, it forms a curtain of water surrounding the plasma arc. This kind of water curtain greatly controls the environmental hazards caused by pollutants such as noise, smoke, arc and metal vapor generated during the cutting process. The water flow required for this method is 55-75L/min.

Underwater cutting is to place the workpiece about 75mm below the water surface. The worktable on which the workpiece is placed is composed of pointed steel members. The purpose of choosing the top-shaped steel components is to make the cutting table have enough capacity to contain the chips and slag.

When the cutting gun is launched into the water, first use a steady compressed airflow to drain the water around the nozzle end of the cutting gun, and then ignite the plasma arc for cutting. When cutting under the water surface, keep the depth of the work piece submerged under the water surface. A set of water level control system should be prepared, and a water pump and storage tank should be added to maintain the water level by means of water injection and drainage.

Generally, a ventilation system should be equipped near the cutting or automatic cutting table of manual plasma cutting machine to extract the exhaust gas out of the workshop. However, the exhaust gas still pollutes the environment. If the pollution caused exceeds the national allowable standard, smoke and dust transition equipment should be added.
