1What is laser cutting technology?

Laser cutting is a processing method that uses the heat of a high-temperature plasma arc to locally melt (and evaporate) the metal at the incision of the workpiece, and use the momentum of the high-speed plasma to remove the molten metal to form an incision.

2How does laser cutting compare with flame gas cutting?

Laser cutting is only effective on metals that can be used as conductors---low carbon steel, aluminum and stainless steel are typical examples. When cutting low carbon steel, the operator will experience a higher speed and deeper cutting effect.

Flame gas cutting cuts by burning high temperature, or cutting metal by oxidation. Therefore, the scope of its application is limited to ferrous metals such as steel, which can be treated by oxidation technology. Metals like aluminum and stainless steel will generate oxides to restrain further oxidation. This makes it impossible for traditional flame gas cutting to process this type of material. Laser cutting does not depend on oxidation treatment, so it can effectively cut aluminum, steel, and other conductive metals.

And different kinds of gases can be used in laser cutting. At present, most people use compressed air for laser cutting. Air compressors are available in most cities. Therefore, laser cutting does not require gases such as combustible gas and compressed oxygen as operating gas.

3What can I do with laser cutting?

Laser cutting is an ideal cutting method for cutting steel and non-ferrous metals with a thickness of less than 1 inch. Flame gas cutting requires the operator to carefully control the cutting speed to maintain the oxidation treatment. Laser cutting is more flexible in this regard. Laser cutting is very good in some applications, such as cutting thin metal plates, which is impossible to achieve when using flame gas cutting. In addition, compared with the mechanical cutting method, the laser cutting speed is much faster, and it is easier to perform non-linear cutting. Cutting aluminum, copper, stainless steel and other metal materials is the strength of the laser cutting machine!

4 What can't be done by laser cutting, but what can be done by flame gas cutting?

Laser cutting is more expensive than flame gas cutting when cutting thick plates. Flame gas cutting does not need to be connected to power and compressed air, which is easier for some users to use. Flame gas cutting is faster than laser cutting when cutting thicker parts of steel. However, the cutting speed of laser cutting machine is much faster than flame cutting when cutting medium and thin plates, and the efficiency is higher and the effect is better!

5How to choose when purchasing a laser cutting machine?

Once you feel that laser cutting is the right choice for you, you can refer to the following:

5.1 Determine the thickness of the metal you most commonly want to cut

The first factor that needs to be determined is the thickness of the metal that is usually cut. Most laser cutting machine power supplies are rated by cutting capacity and current. Therefore, if you usually cut thin metals, you should consider a low-current laser cutting machine. Also, although small machines cut metal of a certain thickness, the cutting quality may not be guaranteed. On the contrary, you may get almost no cut through results, and useless metal residues will remain. Each machine will have an optimal cutting thickness range set-make sure the settings are suitable for your requirements. In general, the laser cutting machine selection must be multiplied by 60% on the basis of the limit cutting thickness, so that it is the normal cutting thickness of this equipment (the cutting effect can be guaranteed). Of course, the thinner the cutting effect and the faster the speed, the thicker the cutting effect and the cutting speed will decrease.

5.2 Select the load duration of the equipment

If you are going to cut for a long time or automatically set the cutting, make sure to check the machine's work load continuity rate. The load duration is simply the continuous working time before the equipment is overheated and needs to be cooled. The workload duration is usually determined as a percentage based on a standard of 10 minutes. for example. A 60% duty cycle with a current of 100 amperes means that you can cut continuously for 6 minutes at a current output of 100 amperes (10 minutes is 100%). The higher the workload cycle, the longer you can continue cutting.

6Can this kind of machine provide the option of starting at high frequency?

Most laser cutting machines will have a pilot arc that uses high frequency to guide current through the air. However, high frequencies can interfere with nearby electronic equipment, including computers. Therefore, a startup method that can eliminate these high-frequency potential problems may be quite advantageous.

7Comparison of loss and life

There are various external parts on the laser cutting torch that need to be replaced, usually we call them consumables. The machine you need to look for should be the one that uses the least consumables. Fewer consumables means cost savings.
